Peter Fischli & David Weiss Limited Edition signed and numbered photographic print, titled “Untitled (Mushroom), 2006”, published by Counter Editions, London.
The work is signed in black ink by both artists, to the lower right recto and numbered 19/120 to the lower left. The print is framed by Derbyshire, in black-lacquer sprayed maple, with conservation overmount, glazed in 3mm clear Perspex and comes complete with a split-baton hanging device.
Untitled (2006) is taken from a series of photographs of ferns, fungi, flowers, insects, grasses and undergrowth. Each photograph is a double exposure, made by either Peter Fischli or David Weiss taking pictures and then handing the camera over to the other, or maybe not, rewinding the film, and shooting again on the same roll of film. The result is a kaleidoscopic world of double-vision; beautiful hybrids that celebrate the unexpected sublime in everyday things. It is an intriguing contradiction that in their search for beauty Fischli / Weiss have explored some of the most clichéd and familiar themes in art history – sunsets, dramatic landscapes, flora and fauna – and some of the most humdrum and unexpected – such as airports, suburban housing estates and motorways. In Fischli / Weiss’s universe, both types of subject matter merit equal scrutiny.
Peter Fischli and David Weiss (Swiss, 1952 and 1946 – 2012) collaborated on projects that variously combined, rearranged, and manipulated quotidian experiences into unexpected configurations across mediums. Executed in sculpture, film, and photography—and combinations thereof—the duo’s work conveniently and playfully avoided any distinction between high and low art and materials. Their practice is best known—and perhaps best exemplified—by the film The Way Things Go (1987), for which the pair orchestrated a series of improbable Rube Goldberg-esque arrangements of household objects and studio detritus, documenting the mechanisms in their whimsical unfolding.
