For sale a beautiful and iconic low-slung sideboard (model #-S201), designed by John & Sylvia Reid for the Stag Cabinet Company Ltd, in 1959 and launched in 1960.
The Sideboard was part of what has become commonly referred to as the “S” Range, which was Stag’s first foray into dining room furniture. The range, though well received at the time, didn’t sell very well and was eventually discontinued in 1963, resulting in it’s rarity and contributing to it’s collectability today.
The sideboard consists of 4 drawers (top one is a felt-lined cutlery drawer), two cupboards, one with a height-adjustable shelf and the other with two felt-lined removable trays which, like the shelf, are also adjustable for position. The unit is made of oiled teak veneer and features very distinctive, nickel-plated steel projecting ‘tab’ handles and ‘V’ shaped ‘hairpin’ legs.
The cabinet is firm and stable and in good vintage condition, with small marks and scratches commensurate with 55 years of age and use, most notably a ring mark to the top and a faint drip-like stain to one of the cupboard doors (see photos) but absolutely nothing to detract. All the internal parts, which are in a lighter wood, are very clean and in good condition, bar one drawer that has some faint colouration due, perhaps, to having been used to store pens/art materials.
Measurements: width 137.5cm, depth 46cm, height 70cm
A beautiful and highly collectable piece of iconic British design that would look fantastic in any mid-century, retro, modern or contemporary setting and would work well in a living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway or even an office.
