For sale, is a signed, unique, hand-watercolour print with ‘googly eyes’, titled “THE WORLD IS DEEPER THAN THE DAY THINKS” by Jake Chapman and produced in 2022.
The work is one of 19 unique hand-signed Artist Proofs, hand watercoloured and embellished with stick-on 3d googly eyes on an altered digital print of Francisco Goya’s ‘Que locura!’ etching taken from the artist’s series, “Los Desastres de la Guerra” (Disasters of War), Madrid 1863.
Each of the 19 works produced in this series features googly eyes, some have glitter and all are different from one another. Printed on Colorplan White Frost 350gsm paper, the work is mounted and framed in a birchwood box frame.
Working together with his older brother, Dinos Chapman, Young British Artist Jake Chapman has been producing installations, sculptures, paintings and works on paper since the early 1990s that appal, anger, seduce, and thrill—often simultaneously. An iconoclast to his core, Chapman describes himself as a collection of “traitorous little traits that add up to make the big deplorable trait that is me, me, me.” Such tongue-in-cheek humour underpins all of his work, through which he confronts the horrors and excesses of history, culture, politics, and religion with an unforgiving aesthetic. He does not shy away from representations of sex, violence, and mutilation. In Fucking Hell (2008), for example, he and his brother created an immense tabletop tableau representing the 20th century as a grotesque, apocalyptic warscape. (Artsy)
Jake Chapman is represented by industry-leading galleries and collected by major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Tate.
