In 2017 Serpentine presented a major exhibition ‘The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!’ of new work by Grayson Perry, one of the most astute commentators on contemporary society and culture. As part of the exhibition, the artist’s hand-made ceramic work Long Pig, 2017, featured at the entrance to the show. This ‘Little Pig’ piggy bank emulates its larger counterpart whereby the owner can ‘vote’, much like the ‘Long Pig’, by inserting coins into the appropriate slots that they identify with.
Grayson Perry is best known for his ceramics, which draw on both the aesthetics of classical pottery and contemporary iconography. He often references his feminine alter ego “Claire,” who has appeared throughout the rest of his extensive oeuvre as well. Perry also makes textiles, sculptures, and installations, and he has written graphic novels and spearheaded a broadcast television program. Some of Perry’s major themes include the roles of gender, class, taste, and religion in contemporary life, particularly in the United Kingdom. He has exhibited in London, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, and beyond. He won the Turner Prize in 2003. (Artsy)
