For sale is this wonderfully playful “Ribbon” Lamp, in silver, designed by British lighting designer Claire Norcross for Habitat, UK in 2005.
The lamp, which is made from a single sheet of galvanised steel, has been ingeniously shaped and folded like a paper ribbon, to create this simple origami-like design. These lamps were sold in two sizes and various finishes, of which this is the smaller.
Claire Norcross, who was head of lighting design at Habitat for several years, under the stewardship of Tom Dixon, who was the design director at the time, was responsible for various standout lighting designs, including “Aperture”, “Eight Fifty” and this, the “Ribbon” lamp, which received the ‘Best in Lighting’ award from Elle Decoration magazine in 2006. Claire Norcross uses a range of materials and lighting technologies to create designs that are inspired by the natural world. In 2009, she was selected for the prestigious Jerwood Contemporary Makers Exhibition.
Sir Terence Conran said of her, “Design Classic’ is an overused phrase in this industry, but I expect it to be associated with the work of Claire Norcross for a long time to come.”
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with minor wear commensurate with age and use, is controlled by an in-line on/off switch and is in perfect working order. See photos for several marks on the shade.
