For sale a Mid-Century Modernist two seater sofa (or Loveseat), designed by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International, c.1975.
This fabulous and very clever design consists of a cylindrical “bundle” of triangular tubes that spring from the ground, separate like branches and flow to form the frame, crossbars and armrests. Launched in 1975 by Knoll International, The “Aulenti Collection” which consisted of tables & chairs, 2 and 3 seater sofas, armchair and coffee tables, was inspired by a series of sketches that displayed fluid shapes branching into space. The sofa is formed from strong tubular steel and has it’s original leather upholstery with Knoll lining.
The frame has chips & scratches to the paintwork and the leather cushions have some expected wear with areas of cracking on the seats, commensurate with 40 plus years of age & use. The springs are all present and firm, the lining underneath one of the seat cushions has a couple of small holes and the plastic feet are all present. The two, internal seat crossbeams are slightly distorted in shape (see photos) but firm and not visible with the cushions on.
